Candidate Election Campaign Signs

The Municipal Election Act, amended by Bill 181 now requires that candidates and third party advertisers provide identification information on advertisements, including signs.  For candidates, subsection 88.3 (2) of the Act states that an election advertisement purchased by or under the direction of a candidate shall identify the candidate.  However, unlike for third party advertiser signs, there are no further requirements to indicate how a candidate election campaign sign shall identify the candidate.
Therefore for the purposes of candidate election signs, the Town of Wasaga Beach will interpret this subsection of the legislation as follows:
  • A 'traditional' election campaign sign purchased by or on behalf of the candidate that states the name of the candidate, (which may also include the words 'elect', 're-elect' etc.) will meet the  identification requirements under subsection 88.3 (2).  No additional identification information is required on the sign, however candidates may wish to identify their campaign and contact information at their discretion.
